The prints to the left are woodcuts. The paper size is 7 1/4" square. The printed area is 2 7/8" x 3 7/8". They are sold in sets of seven prints, contained in a black linen-finished case (shown to the left). Here is the story of how they came about. In 1999, Thomas wrote a wonderful little book called Original Self for which I made 50 woodcuts. The reviews, both professional and from readers, were very positive. "This new, slender volume from the bestselling author of Care of the Soul deserves a wide readership…. Best of all is the art: a woodcut by Joan Hanley graces each essay. Presented in an unusual and attractive square format." * "Meditations on living authentically from a top spiritual writer; with lots of nice woodcuts." * "The gentle woodcut illustrations are a perfect addition to the text — both are quiet jewels that shine brighter as time goes on, instead of fireworks that get a lot of adulatory press and then fade from sight forever." * At that time, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston was selling original prints of local artists in their bookstore and they offered to sell a boxed set of these prints. I brought my wood blocks to master printer, Art Larson (who is known as the late Leonard Baskin's printer) and together we made an addition of 50 of seven favorite images from the book on handmade Japanese paper. We also printed black linen finished case to hold the set and two signed statements (one from Thomas and one from me) to accompany the prints. I put aside 20 sets that are now for sale exclusively through this website for the price of $500 per set + shipping.
